Overview
It seems we have not even said goodbye to the summer of 2024 yet, but we are already receiving the first new Highly Skilled Migrant joiners for January 2025! This seems like a perfect time to start refreshing our memories and help you remain compliant!
Who will be affected?
If you hire a Highly Skilled Migrant employee per 1 January 2025, and they are already employed by another recognised sponsor, they will have a “change of employer” notification. These Highly Skilled Migrants’ salaries need to meet the new thresholds that will be effective per 1 January 2025.
Background
At the start of every year, new salary thresholds are implemented in the Netherlands. These new thresholds are usually communicated towards the end of December of the previous year.
When a Highly Skilled Migrant, employed in the Netherlands by a recognised sponsor and is hired by a different recognised sponsor, it is considered a “change of employer”. When a Highly Skilled Migrant changes employer, they must meet the salary threshold applicable on their joining date/ start date of employment.
Impact
It is recommended to keep track of the Highly Skilled Migrants, who come from a different recognised sponsor entity in the Netherlands, that are hired before the new thresholds are officially communicated. In particular these that are earning marginally above the current thresholds. That way, once the new salary criteria are communicated, they can be easily assessed, compared and placed in parallel with the new required threshold.
