Windsor history
Although the early history of Windsor is somewhat ambiguous before the Normans arrived, there was almost certainly a population there prior to their invasion of England. Once the Normans had settled here however, William the Conqueror built a ‘motte and bailey’ castle, which was the origin of the famous Windsor Castle.
Throughout the middle ages, Windsor cemented itself as a town of national significance and one of England’s wealthiest areas. This came from its close association with the royals, who hired countless merchants from London to help decorate the castle. The 14th century brought with it the ravages of the black plague, which reduced many towns’ populations by as much as 50%. Windsor suffered the same, but the building projects helped bring townspeople to the area and within a few years the total population had doubled. Important cultural figures of the time, such as Geoffrey Chaucer, were heavily linked with Windsor.
The town became a site of pilgrimage for Londoners with the building of St George’s Chapel in the late 15th century, a building that housed an array of highly important Christian relics. The world-famous Eton College was built around this time too and it remains an internationally renowned educational institution.
Today, Windsor’s popularity still relies upon its royal connections, but its array of great schools, outdoor spaces and connections to London make it a top destination for families and commuters alike.
Living in Windsor
Most people living in Windsor would describe it as safe, clean and surrounded by fantastic outdoors activities. Despite its association with ‘old money’, Windsor offers a wide range of properties suitable for people from all walks of life, though it is worth mentioning that homes in Windsor are more expensive than many other similarly sized towns in Britain. Presently, a three-bedroom house costs around £580,000 on average, which could be a hurdle for some families. Don’t be afraid to shop around however! A decent chunk of homes are eligible under the UK government’s ‘Help to Buy’ scheme, something you should definitely investigate if you are a UK resident.
